Abstract : A new technique for the computer solution of problems in solid mechanics is introduced, and an example of the large deflections of a spherical cap is used to illustrate the method. Coding systems can be established through which powers of trigonometric series are expanded by the computer. The method is particularly suited to problems involving the minimization of potential energy with respect to undetermined coefficients. If long series expansions of the dependent variables are needed for adequate convergence, hand computation of the potential energy expression in terms of the undetermined coefficients is too tedious.
