Abstract : It is mandatory that shear be taken into consideration when calculating the frequencies of free oscillations and the amplitudes of the forced oscillations in plastic ships. Ignoring shear results in errors of up to 15% in determining the first tone of the oscillation, and of up to 50% for the second, when determining the frequencies of the free oscillations. The high damping characteristics of a plastic ship's hull make it undesirable to compute the free oscillations for the higher tones. At frequencies of disturbing forces higher than the frequencies of the third to fourth tones the deformation of the shear becomes the basic factor determining the magnitude of the amplitude of the forced vibration. The use of computers makes it easy to overcome the difficulties involved in making the calculations connected with the need to take the effect of the internal inelastic resistance and the shear into consideration.
