Abstract : The reflection spectra of CdS:CdSe solid solution alloys have been measured at room temperature for photon energies in the range 4.0 - 10.0 ev. The shift in energy of several direct interband transitions (E0, E'0, E1, E2) with varying cation composition has been observed. The structure is interpreted in terms of an analogous zincblende model, which has been shown to differ from the wurtzite in the (0, 0, 1) direction in the folded zone scheme of Birman only by the omission of a small trigonal field perturbation. The observed monotonically increasing variation in E0 is in good agreement with that reported by Handelman and Kaiser. The variation in the transitions is qualitatively interpreted as resulting from an effective lattice parameter dilation which occurs in the alloying process. This dilation is shown to give rise to a potential of deformation which has a perturbing effect on the band edges. (Author)
