Abstract : Along with standard methods of checking and testing tubes, ultrasound and eddy currents are widely applied at present for detection of hidden defects (cracks, nonmetallic inclusions, stratifications, blisters) and deep notches and scratches on the internal surface of the tube, for the determination of dimension of grains, and for the measurement of wall thickness and corrosion of samples during autoclave tests. The conducted investigations and accumulated experience show that ultrasonic flaw detectors are more sensitive to small internal defects and notches on the surface of tubes than eddy current equipment. The latter basically is used for measuring the thickness of tube walls and samples during corrosion tests. In the report certain questions of the theory of ultrasonic defectoscopy of thin-walled tubes are considered and a description of defectoscopy equipment now applied is given. (Author)
