Abstract : Colloid lifetimes for sustained mobility have now exceeded six months in bench tests, and tests of units in actual display operation indicates that lifetimes can also be very long in functioning displays. RIS Films have been prepared on plastic substrates giving rise to the promise of all-plastic units which would greatly simplify the technology of sealing, and would drastically lower the price of display panels. A sealing technique involving all-glass units appears to show considerable promise of solving the glass-sealing problem. Panels for 4in x 8in display have been constructed, and illumination provided by means of incandescent and high pressure discharge lamps. Heat effects are the most serious problem in the current arrangement. AC frequency has been found to be a non-critical factor in display switching, and curves have been obtained which show optimum choices for number of cycles of AC, and pulse current amplitudes.
