Abstract : Details are reported on the design for 1/20 linear scale model of an approximately 15,000 pound 40 foot long missile (Hydra) now operated by the Naval Missile Center, Pt. Mugu, from a vertically floating position on the open ocean as a scientific space probe. Natural periods of model oscillation of 1.9 seconds in heave and 3.0 seconds in pitch are predicted. The model was built and proof tested. It is desired to improve missile stability in a seaway. Hence, there is included a program for the measurement in the wave tank (100 x 2 x 3 feet high) of the response of the model freely floating in water 2.5 ft deep to regular waves of varying height up to 5.0 inches with period and length of respectively 0.90 seconds and 4.1 feet to 4.5 seconds and 38.8 feet. These measurements, besides steering missile modification where required, should assist in the prediction of missile response to seas up to state 4. (Author)
