Abstract : The results of the drop size sample study indicate that volumes of about 50 cu m are necessary to estimate rainfall rate and radar reflectivity to 10 percent accuracy with 95 percent confidence. One-cubic-meter samples are sufficiently large that rainfall rate-radar reflectivity relationships can be reliably determined. The sample size variances contribute about 10 percent of the logarithmic scatter around the regression line. Analysis of drop size data from Indonesia yielded a reflectivity rate relationship simialr to that from Miami, Florida data but with less scatter. Five-minute rainfall rate frequencies from Indonesia were also similar to those from Florida. (Author)
