Abstract : The determination of nonsteady onedimensional flows can be reduced to solving certain MongeAmpere equations. Comparison of any two solutions of the same MAequation shows that the map of one utplane onto the other preserves area. A classical parametric representation of all areapreserving maps can be combined with a particular solution of an MAequation to produce the general solution. Particular solutions can easily be constructed for perfect gases and for a vast number of more general equations of state. (Author)
