Abstract : The paper describes how mathematical models can be used in the theory of organization. Authority relationships are used to develop a canonical form of organization. Communication constraints on the canonical form are shown. A stratified organization, used when a canonical form cannot be used to satisfy the constraints, is described. Organizational effects of varying communication load and a sequential decision process model are discussed. (Author)
