Abstract : The medullated fiber is represented by a distributed active circuit and an expression involving theseveral ionic conductances is obtained for the voltage variation at a node; an heuristic argument is offered to show that this voltage cannot in general be described by an ordinary, linear, second-order differential equation even if the ionic conductances are specifically known as functions of time. It is also shown that the conduction velocity of a class of unmyelinated fibers can be approximated by a simple algebraic function of the fibers' parameters. (Author)
