Abstract : An experimental investigation was conducted to study the natural convection of a high kinematic viscosity oil enclosed in a horizontal cylinder. The circumferential wall of a 5 in. I. D. copper cylinder was heated according to a cosine temperature distribution. The maximum and minimum temperatures on the cylinder wall were chosen for large Prandtl numbers and unit order Grashof numbers. The experimental equipment was so designed that a variety of heating configurations could be investigated, namely, ranging from the heating-from-the-side to the heating-from-below case. For several heating configurations, detailed velocity and temperature measurements were performed over the entire cross section of the midplane between the two ends of the cylinder. The physical nature of the core region and of the boundary layer region were studied in each considered case. Some of the experimental results were compared with the theory, which had been established previously for this problem. (Author)
