Abstract : The study was undertaken to develop a research instrument that would assess the degree of severity with which NCOs and company grade officers react to various types of situations in which trainees fail to perform properly. A preliminary version of a Corrective Action Questionnaire was developed, and it was administered to 131 subjects in order to develop information to revise the research instrument. Results of the trial administration suggested that: (1) more severe corrective action would be taken by older cadre who had spent more time in the Army, served longer in a training company, and had not attended college; (2) officers consistently proposed less severe corrective action than NCOs; (3) First Sergeants and those NCOs rated by their superiors as above average tended to be more severe than those NCOs rated as below average; and (4) officers and NCOs showed a high degree of agreement as to the relative seriousness of trainee performance failures. The Corrective Action Questionnaire, as revised, may be expected to be an effective research instrument. (Author)
