Abstract : A new photoelectric apparatus for sensitive detection and precise measurement of magneto-optical rotations is described. The device, utilizing two photomultiplier tubes in a balanced d.c. bridge circuit, operates at a higher light level than those previously employed and provides a larger magnetization signal and an improved signal-to-noise ratio. The reported data show that rotations as small as 5 sec of angle are readily detected and those of a few minutes of angle (characteristic of the longitudinal Kerr effect) can be measured with a precision of a few seconds.
