Abstract : An investigation was made by absorption spectroscopy to ascertain the electronic structures of alloys. It was found that the rigid-band model is applicable to certain alloys and not to others. It was proven that when it is not applicable, the bonding is more convalent than metallic in character, thus suggesting that bonding rather than simple electronic concentrations must be considered in alloys. This was further confirmed in the examination of the electron compounds (Hume-Rothery phases) having the CsC1 structure. (Author)
