Abstract : The objective of the program is to develop two instruments: one for detecting water in jet fuel and the other for detecting water in residual fuel. The basic technique being considered is infrared absorption at the 2.8-micron wavelength. At this point in the infrared spectrum, the extinction coefficient for the HOH structure is large. By utilizing the long wavelengths of light, the extinction coefficient for secondary contamination is small. This specificity will make the instrumentation accurate and reliable. Also, the measurements will be noncumulative as compared with techniques that the Navy utilizes today. (Author)
