Abstract : Using Al2O3 as the study material, an investigation of the fusion casting process was made. Furnaces and molds suitable for experimental casting are described. A mathematical treatment and some experimental results on heat extraction are given. The effects of minor chemical additions and vibrational casting on macro- and microstructure are shown. A technique for measuring damping capacity was developed which provided an evaluation of castings and reasons for unsoundness of castings. (Author)
