Abstract : Energy distribution in flames: It is shown that it is possible to obtain the original distribution of the energy among the rotational levels of the CH radical formed in hydrocarbon oxygen flames at low pressure. Amongst the higher rotational levels the energy is found to be statistically distributed corresponding to a temperature of 2300K. Below 9 torr it is not affected by energy transfer but at higher pressures enough energy transfer collisions take place so that the energy distribution becomes affected before radiation takes place. Certain diluents introduced in the flame such as carbon dioxide are more effective than others, nitrogen in particular. Electrical discharges through oxygen: Four different types of DC glow discharges were found to occur in oxygen. They are best characterised by the type of oscillation of the potential at the off ground electrode. The field in the positive column of these discharges was measured between 0.5 and 5 torr. Langmuir probe characteristics have shown that significant changes occur in the electron energy distribution. The temperature first increases due to an increase in the concentration of positive ions and then decreases due to the formation of negative ions. (Author)
