Abstract : Whenever there are delays in the reporting of information about target positions as determined by the radar positions, there will be errors in the reported positions. These errors are due to the fact that time is required to report and to transmit target-positions and that during that time the target has moved from the position shown on the radar screen. These errors can be quite appreciable with high speed targets, and with long delays in the transmission of information. In order to show the magnitude of these errors, and in order to facilitate the calculation of maximum allowable delays, for any given set of conditions, mathematical formulae are derived for the calculation of errors in range and errors in bearing due to time delays in the transmission of information. These equations show that speed of the target, target course, initial range, and total time delay all affect the magnitude of errors in either bearing or range. Furthermore, these factors all interact to produce a complicated relation between the magnitude of the error and the time delay. (Author)
