Abstract : Activation energies were measured for the adsorption and desorption of oxygen on cadmium sulfide surfaces. On the basis of these and other results it is suggested that there are two types of oxygen adsorption. One type produces charged surface states, the other leads to a dipole layer. Preliminary observations were made on a zinc oxide crystal. No photoenhanced uptake of oxygen was noted and no changes in surface photovoltage were obtained.
