Abstract : There is an optimum gear-ratio for operating a remote PPI. The optimum, however, depends upon a number of factors--the most important of which is the angular distance through which the cursor must be moved to get it on the pip. If the distance is very short, say, 15 degrees, the optimum is high--in the neighborhood of 20 revolutions of the crank for one revolution of the cursor. If the distance is longer, say, 165 degrees, the optimum is much smaller--about 5:1. If one averages all distances likely to be encountered in normal operation of PPI's, the optimum is still about 5:1. This, therefore, is the recommended ratio for typical radar operation. (Author)
