Abstract : A total of twenty-two new neodymium doped laser glasses were made and compared to the standard Kodak ND-11 silicate based glass. One of these compositions shows promise of having a significantly improved durability under laser action at high energy densities. Several others in certain sizes show improved efficiency. An unwinding technique has also been developed for the fabrication of large laser rods from precast blocks of equal volume, but of much smaller size. Laser rods up to 72 inches were delivered for evaulation to the U. S. Army Missile Command, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. (Author)
