Abstract : The purpose of the report is to describe the initial work performed in establishing a correlation between the solid state structure of lithium fluoride, and the thermoluminescence produced by interaction with ionizing radiation. Single crystals of lithium fluoride were grown, containing large concentrations of magnesium, in an attempt to determine the effects of this activator on the kinetics of thermoluminescence. The method of crystal growth and subsequent analysis of the crystals produced are discussed. Because F-centers in lithium fluoride have been extensively investigated it was felt useful to look at the methods of producing this center. The production of F-centers by means of x rays and by ultra-violet light of short wave-length is described. Light sources for producing ultra-violet light is also discussed. Finally, the instrumentation produced for this study together with future plane are discussed. (Author)
