Abstract : The study applies the Gunning Fog Count measure of readability to individual four-choice items measuring job knowledge, and then investigates the relationship between item readability and validity. The Gunning Fog Count is based on average sentence length and percentage of words having three or more syllables. Item validity coefficients were point-biserial correlations against a criterion of three peer ratings on a scale of overall job proficiency. Results support the hypothesis that the probability for satisfactory item validity is decreased beyond certain levels of reading difficulty. These levels vary with different types of jobs. (Author)
