Abstract : Wood-plastic combinations were prepared from four wood species: white pine, yellow pine, maple, and walnut, by impregnation with methyl methacrylate and subsequent exposure to gamma radiation. Results of static bending, hardness, and toughness tests showed no appreciable improvement in the properties beyond those of the untreated walnut. Furthermore, increased weight and cost indicate that wood-plastic materials prepared from readily available cost woods would not serve as suitable substitutes for walnut gun stocks. (Author)
