Abstract : A qualitative discussion is given outlining the need to study radiation fields of military interest, noting the parameters involved in defining such fields, and describing some methods by which these parameters may be evaluated. A discussion of characteristics of the radiation fields for each of the following five geometries associated with fallout is presented: (1) in air 3 feet above a fallout field; (2) at the midpoint of a foxhole in a fallout field; (3) in air 3 feet above the ground and 200 feet from a cobalt60 source; (4) at the midpoint of a foxhole 200 feet from a cobalt60 source; and (5) at the central point of a conceptual, compact, sophisticated fallout simulator. The latter three cases represent methods which might be employed to simulate the actual fallout radiation fields as described by the first two cases. The simulated fields are qualitatively compared with their actual counterparts. (Author)
