Abstract : A uniform magnetic field perturbation of the 1/r coulomb field between the plates of a spherical quadrant electrostatic analyzer was calculated using action-angle variables. The effect of the uniform earth's magnetic field on the electrostatic analyzer flown on satellite 1963-25 beta was shown to be negligible for particle energies above 10 keV. For electron energies below 1 keV, the perturbation of the electron trajectories would not be negligible for analyzer plates with a mean radius of 5 cm. (Author)
