Abstract : Backscattering coefficients in twenty logit frequency bands between 0.1 and 10 kcps from seven explosions at six locations in the North Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea are reported. Five different physiographic provinces are represented, but environmental data are insufficient to relate scattering coefficients to the measurement locales. High fluctuation as a function of angle of incidence at frequencies below 1 kcps is interpreted as due to reflections from below the bottom while small fluctuations and occasional distinct echoes above 1 kcps are taken to be due to the topography of the sea floor. At low frequencies there is a somewhat larger dependence of the scattering coefficient on the angle of incidence than was found at higher frequencies. (Author)
