Abstract : An experiment is reported which involves the measurement of transfer of training to a motor task following varying amounts of preliminary practice on a paper-and-pencil representation of the task. Five matched groups of subjects, each containing 30 Navy enlisted men, were used in the experiment. Each group learned a motor skill which required four different manual responses to four panel lights, differing in color and position. A control group had no preliminary practice; the other groups were given 8, 16, 24, and 48 trials, respectively, on the paper-and-pencil task. The motor task, involving differential reactions to two sets of switches numbered 1 and 2, located on the left and on the right of the center line of a reaction panel, was practiced in all groups throughout 60 trials. The learning of the motor task was measured in terms of time required for each correct reaction and in terms of numbers of errors. (Author)
