Abstract : An experimental investigation was made to determine the role of mechanical-strength properties on the spallation phenomena due to hypervelocity impact. The size of the impacting particle and the thickness of the target were held constant, while the impacting velocity and the yield strength of the target were varied. The spall location, the magnitude of the shock wave arriving at the target's rear surface, and the amount of bulging of the spall piece were measured. The bulging could be predicted with theory to good agreement.
