Abstract : The Hydrogen Generator consists of three major components: the liquid ammonia feed tank, the cracker coil assembly, and the hydrogen purifier. The delivery rate of the ultra-pure hydrogen product is infinitely variable up to 140 SCFH at 3 psig, with liquid ammonia input at 240 psig. The principle of the operation of the Hydrogen Generator is that gaseous ammonia feeding to the burner initially heats the cracker coils. Liquid ammonia is then pumped to the pre-heater (hydrogen product cooler) where it is vaporized, and then passes through the hot cracking coils where it dissociates into hydrogen and nitrogen. Pure hydrogen is forced through the diffuser on demand, while hydrogen-depleted gas is returned to the burner. By proper control, the burner is run on depleted gas alone at all levels of hydrogen demand. Thus, once operating, the system functions solely on liquid ammonia. (Author)
