Abstract : The major objectives of the study were to determine the effects of variable injection angle and mass flow on heat transfer and flow characteristics in a vortex field confined in a centrally heated cylindrical tube, and to evaluate hot-wire probe techniques in similar conditions. Maximum vortex strength and heat transfer were generated at a 35 degree injection angle and produced a film heat transfer coefficient 2.3 times greater than that for axial flow at the same mass flow. Hot-wire results correlated reasonably well in similar flow conditions and indicated future possibilities in arc-stabilization studies. (Author)
