Abstract : The experimental study resulted in the visualization of classical sink and source flow combinations in a uniform flow stream. The Hele-Shaw apparatus was used to present two-dimensional displays which were photographed in color. The Hele-Shaw apparatus consists of two matched 20 X 17 inch plates of glass separated by strips of tape between two opposite edges of the glasses. A sheet of water is slowly introduced into one open end of the glasses and flows out the opposite end. The desired patterns of flow were produced by injecting dye streams into the water at the upstream opening and by pumping a contrasting dye in and/or out of the water through holes near the center of one of the glass plates. Pictures were obtained showing the streamlines in a uniform stream of a source, a sink, a sink behind a source (Rankine oval), a sink closely behind a sink (circular cylinder), a row of sinks behind a source (airfoil), and a row of sources between two single sources (engine inlet). A picture simulating potential flow circulation was also acquired. (Author)
