Abstract : The contract provides for the development of a fuel and control system that will enable a turboprop engine to operate on a wide variety of contaminated fuels. Completion of the section of the contract which concerns an analytical and experimental program to provide and substantiate the combustion chamber, fuel insertion and ignition system design concepts for the fuel system is reported. Several methods of fuel insertion were investigated to assess their suitability for use with the specified fuels and contaminants. The evaluation considered such factors as flow calibrations, spray pattern studies and the ability to pass the specified contaminants. Two means of fuel insertion were selected for development with the combustion chamber--an air-assist fuel atomizer and a sonic-type fuel nozzle. Component rig tests were conducted on two basic combustor configurations--an annular combustor that requires ten fuel nozzles and a can-type combustor that utilizes a single fuel nozzle. The annular combustor was selected as the preferred arrangement for use with the AiResearch YT76 turboprop engine, and in conjunction with ten sonic-type fuel nozzles and a standard spark ignition system, was developed to satisfy the objectives of this program phase.
