Abstract : Two methods of measuring two-way antenna patterns are discussed, both of which use portions of existing antenna pattern recording equipment as an electromechanical computer to simulate a two-way pattern. One of these, the Log Sum method, is tested on a two-way antenna system composed of four flush-mounted slots equally spaced around the circumference of a cylinder with a diameter of 11 wavelengths. A theoretical pattern is calculated by assuming that two of the slots transmit in-phase signals and the other two receive a return signal from an isotropic scatterer in the far field. This theoretical pattern is compared with an experimental pattern obtained at the NOLC antenna range. The good agreement of the patterns indicates that the Log-Sum method is valid and useful.
