Abstract : Laboratory, operational, and subjective tests were performed to determine performance capability and to investigate the communications coverage area of a solid-state, low-powered (one watt) transceiver for air traffic control communications at low-activity/low-cost air traffic control facilities and as possible emergency backup equipment, with self-contained antenna, for operation within the cab of airport control towers. Results of the test effort indicated that it was feasible to use low-powered transceivers and standard FAA antennas to provide ATC communications at low-activity ATCT'S. Additionally, it was determined that adequate communications coverage, with negligible antenna pattern deterioration, was obtained when the low-powered transceiver and self-contained whip antenna were operated inside a tower cab. The report contains recommendations to develop a low-powered, portable, all solid-state transceiver, designed to operate on primary power and self-contained rechargeable batteries. (Author)
