Abstract : The device warns the pilot to put the wheels down when the plane is about to make a landing. The equipment has been considered for installation on SNJ and SNB aircraft. It is recommended that the following visual requirements be adopted for this device: (1) The device should present a flashing image on the windscreen. (2) During one cycle, the image should be on for 0.50 second and off for 0.25 second. (3) During the day, the brightness of the image should be about 3500 footlamberts. (4) At night, the brightness of the signal should be about 0.06 footlamberts when the instruments are at 0.05 footlamberts. The night brightness range of the signal should vary with the instrument panel light dimming switch, in order to be slightly in excess of the instrument brightness. (5) On the SNJ, the image should be projected onto the lower portion of the center panel of the windscreen. On the SNB, the image should be projected onto the lower section of the left-hand window (first pilot's position) centered above the air speed indicator. (6) The display should contain the word 'Wheels', surrounded by a larger circle. (7) To protect dark adaptation, the color of the image should be red in accordance with Navy specifications. (Author)
