Abstract : Variational principles analogous to classical ones are exhibited for the eigenvalues of Ax  lambda 2 Bx  lambda x = 0, where A and B are compact, positive operators in a Hilbert space. Unlike the classical ones, they involve a nonquadratic form and both nonlinear and linear auxiliary conditions. (Author)
