Abstract : First a general survey is given of the research undertaken under this grant. Three topics have progressed during the last year in a sufficient manner as to be reported in this document. (I) Burning velocity, flame temperature and reaction zone thickness are reported for gaseous mixtures of hydrogen cyanide, oxygen and nitrogen at different richnesses and dilutions. Accepting the model of an homogeneous reaction for the flame reaction zone, global activation energies and reaction orders are derived. (II) The application of a new technique (simulating burner) allows the estimation of the amount of heat transferred from the flame reaction zone upstream to the burning surface of a solid propellant. Some preliminary data are presented for given conditions of flow and zeroeth degree of mixedness in the preparation zone upstream of the flame. (III) The comparative intensities of CH or C2 show that the yield of excited C2 or CH radicals per molecule of fuel oxidized in the flame is about 1.4 times larger in isobutane than in normal butane flames (with oxygen) at the same richness and degree of dilution with nitrogen.
