Abstract : Investigation of the physical limitations of a pulse compression system due to random phase errors is presented analytically and experimentally. Phase errors influence the performance of a pulse compression RADAR. Random phase errors are involved in this analysis, and form a statistical problem. A theory is formulated treating their effects on the range and Doppler responses of a matched filter receiver. It is necessary to introduce the concept of moments for the statistical analysis of resolution and main lobe shift. The statistical maximum fractional reduction in gain is formulated. The degradation of a discrete pulse compression system is examined. Normally distributed random phase errors are generated and introduced into the Simoramic spectrum analyzer. Their effects on the response output are analyzed. Main lobe broadening, shifting, and peak loss are tabulated and illustrated for different sequences of phase errors. The sidelobe structure also deteriorates. For high phase errors the higher sidelobes totally mask the signal. (Author)
