Abstract : A programmed clamp was developed that produces stable operation of control systems which require compensation with poles outside the unit circle. Curves are included that show the responses of such systems to step and ramp inputs. The comparison process between the reference variable and the controlled variable was performed within the digital computer. This mode of operation required the development of a program for the generation of reference functions by the digital computer. A study of the AN/USQ-20 computer characteristics was conducted and a multiplexed digital control system using the AN/USQ-20 computer was designed, constructed, and installed at the Fleet Computer Programming Center Pacific (FCPCP). Programs were developed for use with the system to provide for the simultaneous control of three independent plants. Preliminary studies of existing shipboard weapon control systems were conducted for the purpose of determining the potential applications of digital computers in new-generation weapon control systems.
