Abstract : Experimental tests were conducted with a simulated digital control system utilizing the AN/USQ-20 digital computer. Results were obtained that agreed exactly with those acquired from earlier tests with the simulated system using the AN/USQ-17 digital computer. Simultaneous control of three independent plants using multiplexing techniques was achieved with the simulated system employing the AN/USQ-20 digital computer. Compensation studies using z-plane root-locus techniques and the dominant-mode technique, which is based on an equivalent continuous control system design, was inaugurated. Preliminary investigations of the effects of quantization on the resultant system error have revealed several techniques for this determination. Two that were investigated produce error bounds which are believed to be larger than those to be expected. Plans were formulated to install and experiment with digital control of a tactical shipboard component. A 3 inch/50 rapid-fire twin-gun mount has been selected for the application. (Author)
