Abstract : The report describes work on the development of an effective statistical communication theory for optical communications. Photodetection statistics have been computed for an optical illumination consisting of a cw signal and narrowband noise and a formula obtained for the information transmittable by an optical detector. Quantum electrodynamics has been used to evaluate the statistics of a narrowband optical communication system and to compute the statistics of a coupled mode system. The report summarizes this work and lists publications during the grant period. (Author)
