Abstract : Chemical interactions of rhenium and carbon with the tungsten matrix were studied by observing changes in shear modulus with composition. The addition of 3% rhenium to tungsten decreased the shear modulus from 19,600,000 psi to 16,100,000 psi. Carbon additions did not change the modulus of the pure tungsten, but 70 ppm carbon increased that of the alloy to 18,700,000 psi. The observed alloying behavior was correlated to the electronic structure. The changes in modulus were attributed to changes in the electronic structure of the metal upon alloying. Differences in the behavior of carbon in the pure tungsten and the alloy were related to an increased carbon solubility in the alloy which in turn is a function of the electronic structure of the metal.
