Abstract : A novel short arc configuration was operated in argon and helium. Vacuum ultraviolet radiation in the spectral range 2000-200 A was observed through a port in the anode. The arc was operated windowless at pressures up to 2000 Torr in conjunction with a three stage differentially pumped vacuum system. A Seya-Namioka half meter monochromator was used for the observations with a 1200 1/mm grating blazed for 1500 A and coated with MgF2. A sodium salicylate detector and an aluminum-terphenyl filter detector combination were employed. The radiating plasma was found to be at LTE with an electron density of 5. 10 to the 16th power/cu cm and a temperature of 1.5 ev. (Author)
