Abstract : There is no analytical method for measuring the amount of carbon pigment in high-gloss black enamels and lacquers, and no accurate procedure for determining the total pigment content of any coating that contains carbon. The colloidal suspension of extremely small particles of carbon prohibit separation and measurement by filtration or by contrifugation. This report describes a new, simple, rapid quantitative method for measuring total pigment in any solvent-type organic coating including those containing carbon pigments. It is based on agglomeration of suspended particles in a nonaqueous medium, followed by filtration and washing in a special crucible.
