Abstract : The Dental Branch, Submarine Medical Research Laboratory at the Submarine Medical Center, conducted a two-year study of the rate of progress of carious lesions on the interproximal enamel surfaces of the teeth of a group of Naval personnel. A total of 305 of such small lesions were kept under observation for the two-year period. During this time only 34 per cent of the lesions had progressed to a point where their elimination and the placement of a restoration were definitely indicated. No teeth were lost because of these lesions in this period of time. It is concluded that where the patient load is such that all lesions cannot possible be eliminated, it is safe to leave such small lesions unrestored, if a regular system of re-examination is instituted to follow their progress. Application of preventive dentistry practices is felt to offer a possible avenue for the control of these lesions. (Author)
