Abstract : Results of laboratory experiments are presented which point out the inherent non-uniform response of photomultiplier tubes. The experimental results show the fluctuations in quantum efficiency as a function of the position of the light signal on the photocathode surface. The effect of this non-uniformity on the operation of optical systems is pointed out and the magnitude of the problem is demonstrated using an RADC amplitude scintillation monitoring system as an example. Finally, a corrective technique is described to minimize the signal fluctuations. (Author)
