Abstract : The thermal decomposition of 2-methyl-2-propanol was studied at 153C with a semi-automatic pyrolysis apparatus. The initial rate constants at various pressures of the butanol (20 to 0.15 mm Hg) usually mixed with argon, in some experiments with oxygen, were measured. The change of the reaction order depending on the reactant pressure was observed. The equilibrium constant for the reaction: (CH3)3COH reversibly yields (CH3)2C:CH2 + H2O was determined and the free energy change at 153C calculated to be -3.21 plus or minus 0.04 kcal/mole.
