Abstract : The report summarizes the results of a two-year study of the reduction of nitro-aromatic compounds in liquid ammoniate solutions at a bright platinum electrode. The initial phases of the study were devoted to examination of the preparative methods and to the determination of the physical properties of a number of liquid ammoniates. The reduction characteristics of a number of mono- and dinitroaromatics and their substituted compounds were then examined in these solvents. Once the general features of these reductions were determined, the study concentrated on an attempt to elucidate the details of the mechanism for the reduction of nitrobenzene in the two solvents of lithium nitrate ammoniate (LNA) and lithium perchlorate ammoniate (LPA). The electrochemical techniques of single and cyclic sweep voltammetry and controlled potential coulometry were used. Additional information regarding the reduction of these compounds was obtained through the application of electron spin resonance (ESR). (Author)
