Abstract : Methods and equipment to improve the replenishment at sea operation capability of the CVA-59 class carrier are proposed in this report. These proposals provide a materials handling system that will permit strikedown of provisions into appropriate storerooms, at a potential rate of 100 tons per hour. This strikedown will commence almost simultaneously with the receipt of the first net load at the landing area. The nucleus of the system proposed centers around two major recommendations; firstly, implement a unit load system of materials handling that will improve the efficiency of cargo movements, and reduce the segregation problem of the material on the hangar deck; secondly, replace the three existing stores elevators (a major bottleneck during strikedown operations), with vertical tray lift conveyors. This will provide a system of continuous strikedown in lieu of the intermittent operation inherent in elevator installations. The installation of the vertical tray lift conveyors aft will also provide two new accesses on the hangar deck and a desirable strikedown media between the hangar deck and lower level storerooms. The equipment proposed will be supplemented by light-weight portable skate wheel conveyors, telescopic chutes and vertical baffle chutes. These additional materials handling aids will assist and accelerate the movement of stores during strikedown operations. (Author)
